Helping Children Get a Great Start
Island Kiddie Kampus is proud to participate in Michigan’s Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP), a state-funded PreK program designed to give eligible four-year-old children a strong foundation for kindergarten and future school success.
GSRP combines high-quality early childhood education with purposeful play, hands-on learning, and developmentally appropriate instruction. Children have opportunities to explore, ask questions, build friendships, develop independence, and discover the excitement of learning in a supportive classroom environment.
Learning Through Purposeful Play
Young children learn by doing. GSRP classrooms provide meaningful experiences that encourage children to investigate the world around them while developing important academic, social, emotional, and physical skills.
Throughout the program, children have opportunities to strengthen:
- Language & Literacy – Building vocabulary, communication, listening, early reading, and early writing skills.
- Early Math Skills – Exploring numbers, counting, patterns, shapes, measurement, and problem-solving.
- Social & Emotional Development – Learning to express feelings, develop friendships, cooperate with others, and become increasingly independent.
- Critical Thinking & Problem-Solving – Encouraging children to ask questions, make choices, experiment, and find solutions.
- Physical Development – Strengthening fine and gross motor skills through movement, play, art, writing, and hands-on activities.
- Science & Discovery – Providing opportunities to observe, investigate, experiment, and learn about nature and the world around them.
- Creativity & Self-Expression – Encouraging imagination through art, music, movement, dramatic play, and other creative experiences.
Preparing for Kindergarten—and Beyond
Kindergarten readiness involves much more than knowing letters and numbers. Children also need confidence, independence, communication skills, curiosity, and the ability to participate successfully in a classroom community.
GSRP helps children practice important school-readiness skills, including listening and following directions, participating in group activities, completing routines, making choices, solving problems, working independently, and cooperating with classmates.

A High-Quality Michigan PreK Program
GSRP is part of Michigan’s PreK for All initiative and operates according to comprehensive state standards for early childhood education. Michigan’s program has also received national recognition for meeting established benchmarks for preschool quality.
GSRP providers participate in Great Start to Quality, Michigan’s quality recognition and improvement system for early childhood programs. This provides another layer of accountability and a commitment to continuous improvement.
Island Kiddie Kampus has achieved the Enhancing Quality – Validated Quality Level through Great Start to Quality.
Who Is Eligible for GSRP?
GSRP is primarily available to Michigan children who are four years old by the state’s eligibility date for the applicable school year. Enrollment requirements, placement priorities, and availability can vary, and families are encouraged to contact Island Kiddie Kampus to determine current eligibility and openings.
There is no cost to eligible families for participation in GSRP.
